‘The Boss’ makes audiences laugh

Recently I had the pleasure of viewing “The Boss.”

The movie premiered in theaters May 8.

“The Boss” is about a wealthy CEO, Michelle Darnell (Melissa McCarthy), who has worked for everything she has gotten.

Growing up with no home and no family to fall back on, Darnell grew up to have trust issues. She pushed away anyone who tried to get close to her.

Darnell is busted for insider-trading within her business and spends four months in jail because of it.

As the time comes for her to be released from jail, Darnell realizes that she has nothing left.

Not only have all of her assets and properties been seized, she goes home to find her house foreclosed.

After realizing that she is homeless, Darnell takes it upon herself to intrude on her former assistant, Claire (Kristin Bell) and Claire’s daughter, Rachel (Ella Anderson). She disrupts their lives and moves into their home, promising to find her way back to the top in the next few weeks.

Darnell tries to get back to how things were before she was in jail, but none of her previous co-workers want to work with her again, realizing that she can be a bit deceiving.

Losing hope on her wishes of regaining her fortune, Darnell lays around eating Claire’s brownies that were made to help Darnell cope with all she has lost.

While eating the brownies, Darnell gets an idea to create a brownie franchise, naming it the “Darnell’s Darlings.”

Darnell ends up convincing Claire to quit her job because of how miserable she is and to commit to the “Darnell’s Darlings” as a full-time baker.

While trying to make the brownie business become successful, the “Darnell’s Darlings” end up competing against Rachel’s previous Girl Scouts group to see who can make the most money from their products.

As the “Darnell’s Darlings” begin to rise to the top, Darnell’s arch-nemesis and ex-lover Renault (Peter Dinklage) becomes aware of Darnell’s success with the business and plots a way to destroy Darnell’s life once again.

The movie shows the journey of Darnell trying to make the brownies turn into a successful franchise and learning to accept the love of Claire and Rachel. While trying not to let her archnemesis her ex-lover Renault stop her on her way back to the top.

Melissa McCarthy did a great job portraying Darnell as a person. She made the movie funny, but at the same time showed Darnell growing into a more sensible human being.

I really enjoyed watching “The Boss.” Not only did it keep me on the edge of my seat the whole time, but my cheeks hurt from laughing so hard.

I recommend viewing this movie if you want a gut-wrenching laugh and a little something to do in your spare time.
