HalloWeekends thrill visitors
With fall just around the corner, students and community members of the Kearsley district are preparing for the upcoming season.
Purchasing sweaters, pumpkin flavored coffee, and taking trips to apple orchards are traditional festivities of fall.
But for the more thrill-thirsty individuals, their favorite part of fall may be Halloween, due to all of the haunted attractions, like HalloWeekends at Cedar Point located in Sandusky, Ohio.
HalloWeekends was first introduced in 1997 and takes place during the Halloween season.
HalloWeekends occur every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday Sept. 19 through Oct. 26.
The park is open Friday nights from 6 until 11 p.m., Saturdays from noon until midnight, and Sundays 10 a.m. until 8 p.m.
On Friday nights, however, certain rides and attractions will not be operating. The Top Thrill Dragster, Millennium Force, Magnum, Raptor, Iron Dragon, and Wicked Twister roller coasters will be the only rides available (weather permitting).
Senior Kayla Morris has visited Cedar Point many times and “loves” every trip.
“The rides are awesome,” Morris said. “All of the rides give you that adrenaline rush you’re looking for.”
Along with the usual rides, Cedar Point will be featuring many haunted houses and scare zones.
Some indoor haunted attractions include the Eternity Infirmary, Hexed, Eden Musee, G.A. Boeckling’s Eerie Estate, and Zombie High School.
Outdoor attractions include Blood on the Bayou, CarnEVIL, Corn Stalkers, and Cut Throat Cove.
There are 20 haunted attractions in total this year, including six haunted houses and six scare zones, with new ones like Slaughter House, and Fear-Y Tales.
HalloWeekends includes not only haunted houses, but buffets, cirque-style shows, and more.
HalloWeekends has been ranked as one of the best Halloween events in the United States.
It was ranked fifth for “Best Halloween Event” in the Golden Ticket Awards from 2005- 2008.
In addition, it was ranked fifth again in 2013 and 2014.
Junior Levi Leyer believes that HalloWeekends is “pretty awesome,” and would love to go again.
“Right when you walk in there is a haunted house that they send you through in groups. It takes like 10 minutes to go through, which was a lot of fun,” Leyer said.
Children 13 and under are encouraged to be accompanied by an adult.
During HalloWeekends, Cedar point also features “The Great Pumpkin Fest,” which is dedicated to activities for children and their families.
It takes place every Saturday and Sunday from 11 a.m. until 7 p.m. before the more adult activities begin.
During this time, there will be parades, trick-or-treating, crafts, kid-sized tractor racing, costume contests, live shows, and more.
Ticket prices for HalloWeekends start from $39.99 and may be purchased in bundles with a group discount.
All-you-can-eat buffet options and fright lane passes are also included in certain ticket packages.
Fright lane passes allow you to skip to the front of the line once for each haunted house and Cornstalkers.
Fast lane passes are also available, which allow people to skip to the front of the line for all regular rides and roller coasters.
“The lines were really long, which was the only downside,” Leyer said. “Many of the roller coaster waiting areas were made into haunted trails though, which was pretty cool.”
Tickets are available online or at the front entrance.
For guests to further enjoy their experience, Cedar Point offers many lodging options for their guests.
Hotel Breakers, Sandcastle Suites, Castaway Bay, and Breakers Express are a few options Cedar Point has to offer.
Camping and cabins are also available at Lighthouse Point.
Guests of all Cedar Point affiliated hotels and campgrounds receive discounts and early entry into the park.
“I encourage everyone to check it (HalloWeekends) out,” Leyer said. “It is pretty exciting and most definitely better than a normal day.”
