Valley picks top 10 movies of 2014
With the end of the year approaching, now is the time to reflect and look back on some of the biggest moments of 2014, the year of movies.
Hundreds came out, thrilling the entertainment industry.
My list of the top 10 movies of the year includes thrillers like “Annabelle” and “Mockingjay,” along with dramas like “The Fault In Our Stars.”
10. “Tammy” is a comedy about a burger-joint worker named Tammy (Melissa McCarthy), who, after a series of disasters, leaves her job and sets out with her grandma (Susan Sarandon) to see the Niagara Falls.
A lot of bad things happen to Tammy, like her car breaking down, finding out her husband has been cheating on her, and losing her job, but she makes the most of it by venturing out to live her crazy life.
The film features tons of funny situations, like Tammy robbing the place where she once worked in means to get her grandma out of jail, and Tammy’s grandma finding romance with an old man.
“Tammy” was one of the funniest movies I have seen in a while.
9. “Maleficent,” starring Angelina Jolie, tells the story of Maleficent, a fairy living in “The Moors,” a forest bordering a human kingdom.
At a young age, Maleficent meets a young boy named Stefan (Sharlto Copley) and they fall in love, but, as they grow older, the boy’s love for Maleficent becomes overshadowed by his desire to become king.
Some time later, Maleficent shows up uninvited to a christening for King Stefan’s newborn daughter, Aurora (Elle Fanning).
Bent on revenge, Maleficent curses the princess so that on her 16th birthday Aurora will prick her finger on a spinning wheel and fall into a deep sleep.
This modernized version of “Sleeping Beauty” was a magnificent film.
8. “The Fault In Our Stars” is based on the dramatic novel, with the same name, written by John Green. The movie features Hazel Grace Lancaster (Shailene Woodley), a girl with cancer whose parents force her into joining a support group. They want her to make more friends and not mope around all of the time.
In the support group, Hazel meets Agustus Waters (Ansel Elgort), an ex-cancer patient missing one leg. After much pining, they fall in love.
From kissing in the Anne Frank house to meeting Hazel’s favorite author, who turns out to be the opposite of the expected, the film is full of tear-jerking drama and romance.
7. “Annabelle,” a prequel to the 2013 horror film, “The Conjuring,” is all about the story of Annabelle, a cursed doll that brings forth disaster to all who possess her.
In the movie, John Form (Ward Horton) found the doll and gave it to his wife (Annabelle Wallis), as an addition to her doll collection.
After bringing the doll into their new house, the Forms are plagued by disaster. A house break-in by satanic cult members, which almost kills the couple, forces the family to move to a new house, in the hope for a brighter future for a now pregnant Mrs. Form.
The family tries to throw the doll away when they move, only to see it make a return appearance in a box when unpacking.
The thriller is full of horror moments, leaving not a minute of disinterest.
6. “22 Jump Street,” the sequel to the 2012 film titled “21 Jump Street,” features officers Schmidt (Jonah Hill) and Jenko (Channing Tatum) going undercover at a local college.
The officers begin to question their partnership after splitting up the investigation for the supplier of a drug called “WHYPHY.” The drug had killed a student that was photographed buying it on campus.
Although the film did not get ratings as high as the first one of the series, the film is full of crime-fighting action and comedy.
The film was well-produced, earning it the sixth spot on my list of the best movies of 2014.
5. “Guardians of the Galaxy,” directed by James Gunn, is based off the marvel comic series of the same name.
In the film, after his mother’s death, Peter Quill (Chris Pratt) is abducted by aliens and grows up living a non-human lifestyle.
Quill steals an orb that is coveted by Ronan, a villain set on ruling the world. Quill must team up with a group of convicts in order to become the guardians of the galaxy and stop the forces of evil.
The film’s cinematography, storyline, and graphics were excellent.
4. “The Amazing Spider-Man 2” is a sequel to the 2012 film “The Amazing Spider-Man.”
In this movie, Peter Parker (Andrew Garfield) must save New York from a newly-emerged super-villain, Electro (Jamie Foxx).
Peter comes to a realization that all his enemies have one thing in common: Oscorp.
Peter Parker must now confront a power stronger than his and find a way to adapt to the new enemies as Spider-Man, while still keeping another life with Gwen Stacy (Emma Stone) as Peter Parker.
The film is full of suspense and will keep viewers on the edge of their seats.
3. “Divergent,” directed by Neil Burger, is a thrilling, action-packed movie.
In a world where society must be divided into five factions, Tris Prior (Shailene Woodley) finds out she is different.
When taking a test to find out which faction she is destined for, Tris finds out that she is divergent. This means that she is destined for more than one of the five factions.
Tris Prior still has to choose, however, and she chooses Dauntless, the faction for those who pursue a life of bravery.
While attempting to hide her divergence, Tris discovers a war that threatens her and everything she loves.
2. “Big Hero Six” is an animated film about a group of college students who must save the city of San Fransokeo.
In the film, ex-robot-fighter Hiro Hamada (Ryan Potter) teams up with college students Go Go (Jamie Chung), Wasabi (Daman Wayans Jr.), Honey Lemon (Genesis Rodriguez), and Fred (T.J. Miller), along with a robot built by his late brother Tadashi, to solve the murder of Hiro’s brother and prevent the murderer from using Hiro’s robots to avenge the loss of his own daughter.
The movie was aimed toward children but still kept a mature audience with the raw emotion mixed into action-filled scenes.
1. “Mockingjay- Part 1” is the beginning of the third novel in the “Hunger Games” series.
In the film, Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence) must rise up and become the “mockingjay,” the symbol of the rebellion, in order to keep the Districts of Panem from being dominated by the Capitol.
After seeing that District 12 has been turned to rubble and that her love interest, Peeta Mellark (Josh Hutcherson), is being held by President Snow, Katniss agrees to become the mockingjay and aid the rebellion.
The film is full of action and suspenseful scenes and definitely earned the No. 1 spot on the list of the best movies of 2014.
2014 was a year of many movies. There are plenty others that I believe were just as good as the ones on this list.
Hopefully, 2015 will bring forth even greater movies than those of 2014.
