Students at the second Kettering camp will use Arduino microcontrollers to build robots.

Kettering University and UM-Flint are offering summer day camps for high school students.

Kettering is offering two computer engineering camps in July.

The first camp, for students ninth grade and above, allows students to “design, build, and program a mobile robot,” according to Kettering’s website.  The cost is $200, and the camp runs July 20 to 24.

The second camp, for students tenth grade and up, is a more in-depth camp that teaches students how to use Arduino microcontrollers to “design, build, and program Arduino-based robots.”

The cost of this camp is $300, which includes an Arduino project kit for the students to keep.

This camp runs July 27 to 31.

UM-Flint also offers a STEM camp.  This camp, for high school students, focuses on product design and development, modeling, and rapid prototyping.

Students will have the opportunity to work with 3-D printers and CNC machines.

This camp runs July 6 to 8.

Junior Gabe Carnes said these camps provide beneficial hands-on experience to students.

“It is definitely something that could be really useful to students who are interested in STEM careers,” Carnes said.
