Christmas is a time for family and friends, it brings everyone together on one day. We all have family traditions that we do every year to keep the Christmas spirit alive. Tradition means the handing down of information, beliefs, and customs from one generation to another. There is a wide variety of traditions that people do, everyone is not the same. We all have our different ways of celebrating but we all have traditions that bring us together for Christmas.
Senior Margarita Martinez says, “My family celebrates on Christmas Eve. Every year we get together to play games, eat, and open presents.” It is common in a Mexican household to celebrate on Christmas Eve, not Christmas. “We play loteria,” (spanish bingo) “Loteria was my abuelo’s favorite game before he passed. My abuelo taught me how to play and now it’s my favorite game as well. I look forward to playing every year.”
Senior Amelia Sporman says, “Every year my family and I get together on Christmas day and Christmas Eve to celebrate together. We play card games, open presents, and eat. My family is very energetic and we always have fun. I do not get to see my whole family very often so it is nice to spend time together for Christmas.” A lot of families have similar traditions that bring everyone together.
Junior Waasnodeh Davis-Hernandez, when asked what her favorite tradition is, she says, “We play secret santa with my whole family, except it’s never really a secret.”
Senior Kallie Mccallum when asked her favorite Christmas tradition she responds, “opening one present on Christmas Eve is my favorite tradition, they are usually pajamas, but it reminds me of the good times in childhood.”
With Christmas right around the corner everyone is getting into the Christmas spirit! People are excited to be off of school, spend time with family, and ready to receive their presents. So don’t forget to hang your Christmas lights, wrap your presents, and bake your Christmas cookies for Santa!
