Students gobble up Thanksgiving leftovers
With the excess food that’s bound to be prepared for Thanksgiving, households across the country will be stocked with leftovers after the holiday.
To some people, leftovers are nothing unusual to cook up. You take them out of the fridge and eat them like anything else.
Other people find them to be the nastiest thing in their refrigerators and will do just about anything to avoid them.
These five people share their opinions on leftovers and what they plan to do with the unavoidable surplus of holiday food.
Senior Allison DePottey
What Thanksgiving food do you like as leftovers?
“Mashed potatoes with gravy, stuffing, and rolls are the best leftovers,” DePottey said.
How long do you think leftovers are good for?
“After about a week and a few days, it starts to get bland,” DePottey said.
How do you prepare the extra holiday food?
“My family and I make turkey noodle soup,” DePottey said. “Instead of it being chicken, it is turkey. We still use chicken flavoring, and it tastes just like chicken noodle soup.”
Senior Anastashya Davis
What Thanksgiving food do you like as leftovers?
“Mashed potatoes,” Davis said. “I love them all, but homemade mashed potatoes are just always delicious.”
How long do you think leftovers are good for?
“Leftovers are good for about a week. After that, they spoil,” Davis said. “But it usually doesn’t come to that in my house.”
How do you prepare the extra holiday food?
“We make turkey soup instead of chicken noddle. We heat up the food and throw it together, maybe find a recipe for something new,” Davis said. “It doesn’t matter. We aren’t picky.”
Senior Niccos Patrick
What Thanksgiving food do you like as leftovers?
“My favorite leftovers have always been honey smoked ham. I don’t even know why,” Patrick said. “The sweetness of it is just amazing combined with the saltiness.”
How long do you think leftovers are good for?
“Leftovers are all right for a week after Thanksgiving,” Patrick said. “Then it just gets kind of bland.”
How do you prepare the extra holiday food?
“With the honey smoked ham, I always turn it into a sandwich, like an authentic ham and cheese sandwich,” Patrick said. “It’s the best sandwich to eat.”
Sophomore Morgan Phillips
What Thanksgiving food do you like as leftovers?
“Everything is good as leftovers after Thanksgiving,” Phillips said. “Unless their is a salad because the lettuce or spinach will wither, and it’s not appetizing. Turkey and cranberry sauce, sweet potato casserole, and green bean casserole are (all) so good.”
How long do you think leftovers are good for?
“Leftovers are good for up to three or four days,” Phillips said. “Unless the food actually goes bad, it tastes good and I will eat it.”
How do you prepare the extra holiday food?
“I like to make sandwiches — whole grain bread with mayo, turkey, mashed potatoes — and warm it up on the stove,” Phillips said.
