School will end one day later

The 2017-18 Kearsley school year will finish one day later than originally planned, wrapping up June 13.

Because of the multiple school days missed this winter due to dangerous weather conditions, students will have to attend school an extra day to ensure they’ve been in school the required amount of time.

KHS will have its final day of exams June 13, which take place the last three days of every semester, while the middle and elementary schools will have a full school day June 12 and a half day on June 13.

According to section 388.1701 of the Michigan Legislature, students must be in school 180 days. This requirement began in the 2016-17 school year. Before this, a full school year only had to consist of 175 school days.

Junior Anastashya Davis isn’t bothered by the extra school day.

Mr. Matt Moore, assistant principal, said students must make up the snow and ice days to fulfill the time requirements students must be in school each year.

“Student’s have to attend class 180 days a year, and we went over the six snow day limit,” Moore said.

The extended school year has cause mixed feelings among students. While some aren’t concerned with the one-day extension, others feel making up a day has ruined plans that were established before the day was announced.

Junior Anastashya Davis isn’t bothered by the make-up day, believing that only one day doesn’t make a difference either way.

“It really doesn’t affect me much,” Davis said. “We have to be here most of the time anyway.”

Sophomore Cole Zemore is disappointed about having to start summer break later than planned.

Other students find the extension to be an interference with their already scheduled summer plans.

Cole Zemore, sophomore, is upset about having to attend school one more day than originally planned.

“I think it really sucks because Alex Willers, the German foreign exchange student, wants me to go to the airport with him when he leaves on June 13,” Zemore said. “But now I can’t go say bye because we have school.”
