Five tennis players earn medals
The tennis team faced Clio and Lapeer at the Lapeer Tri match on Saturday, April 21.
While the team as a whole placed last, five girls won their flights.
Junior Chloe Clarambeau, No.3 singles, was the only singles player in her flight to earn a first place medal.
Clarambeau went head-to-head with Lapeer in her first match.
She had a successful match, winning both sets 6-0, 6-1.
Her next match against Clio was another success.
Clarambeau defeated her opponent 6-1, 6-1.
As a singles player, Clarambeau said achieving first place boosted her confidence.
“In the past, at a quad, I had not won even a single match,” Clarambeau said. “So it did feel good to finally win.”
For the doubles teams, No. 1 partners Brooklyn Smith, junior, and Hannah Hendley, senior took first place.
Smith and Hendley won their first match against Clio 6-2, 6-1. This gave them a large lead in the competition.
“We played well our first match,” Smith said. “We had good net play and lots of communication.”
The second match against Lapeer had a slower start.
Smith and Hendley lost the first set 6-4, but won the second 6-4 putting them into a tie-breaker.
The two ended up losing the tie-breaker (10-5).
Despite losing the second match, the two ended with fewer losses than Lapeer, giving them first place.
“I didn’t expect to get first place, but it was cool since I’ve never gotten first before,” Smith said.
Lapeer and Clio did not bring a No. 8 doubles to compete in the tri-match.
Due to this, the No. 8 doubles team of sophomores Hannah Simms and Kennedy Bostwick were given first place.
In the end, Clio placed first, Lapeer was second, and the Hornets took third.
