Forget resolutions, develop positive traits

As resolutions for the new year slowly fade away, there are a few things I hope to manifest in 2018.

The first is patience.

Patience is such an easy thing to lose.

We are quick to get angry when people are driving slowly in front of us or when the lunch line is taking too long. These are just simple parts of life that we have to live with.

No matter what you say or think, people will still drive slowly and the lunch line still has to feed everyone.

Being patient means accepting that the things around you will continue to happen and being able to slow down and smell the roses a bit along the way.

Once you become good at practicing patience, you will find yourself living your life at your own pace, rather than everyone else’s.

Another thing I want to become mainstreamed is acceptance.

The world as we know it is polarized. As things are changing politically and socially, the world grows further divided.

Although we should advocate our beliefs through freedom of speech, we should also allow others to do the same.

Even though we are becoming increasingly polarized, we should still be respectful of what others choose to practice in their own lives.

This acceptance of others will allow the division among people to dissolve, and we can begin supporting and encouraging people instead.

After all, we cannot receive respect for our own opinions if we bring others down for theirs.

People should also focus on their self-esteem this year.

The internet has raised a generation that glorifies sadness.

I see too many of my friends and followers on social media making jokes about how being sad is cool. We should be encouraging happiness, not promoting sadness.

As millennials grow, it is important to raise them on love and compassion for themselves and others — not self-deprecation.

It is upsetting to see so many people I know practicing unhealthy habits. I hope that in 2018 my peers can start being positive toward themselves.

From there, it will radiate onto others.

Finally, it is important for people to spend positive time with themselves.

We rush through each day forgetting to feel.

By doing this, we are getting to know the busy, and stressed side of ourselves, eventually forgetting all of the good qualities we obtain.

Get to know yourself, spend time alone on purpose.

Find out what you like to do.

The more positive time we spend on our own, the more positive we will become.
