Golf takes seventh at pre-season league tournament
The golf team took seventh at the Flint Metro League’s Pre-Season League Tournament at Fenton Farms on Monday, April 17.
The Hornets ended with a total of 388, nine strokes behind sixth-place Linden.
Fenton won the event, shooting 326 as a team. Holly was second, 353, and Flushing was third, 357.
Junior Jack Vollmar led the team with a total of 89 strokes.
Fenton’s Patrick Conroy and Tait Shaltz were the medalists, both shooting an 80.
For the Hornets, senior Connor VanSteenburg and sophomore Tyler Gronauer followed behind Vollmar with totals of 97 and 99, respectively.
“We obviously could’ve done better,” Gronauer said. “We all could’ve gotten lower scores and had a better performance overall.”
Coach Andy Nester had some advice for Gronauer and his teammates.
“Nester told us this is not where we want to be right now for the season,” Gronauer said. “Improvement is the only thing that can happen now.”
The golf team’s next match is against Holly at Heather Highlands on Thursday, April 20.
