Spring breakers, follow these tips for a fun and safe trip

Students have been counting down the days until spring break since the school year started. The 2017 spring break is finally here. Keep these tips in mind to stay safe and have a memorable vacation.

Be familiar with the area

Always know your surroundings. Being aware of what to expect when you are going to a new place can help keep you safe.

Many different states have different rules about driving and what could get you pulled over, including driving while on the phone. The last thing you need on a trip is a hefty fine or worse.

Be sun smart

Use waterproof sunscreen and reapply often. Pay extra attention to your ears, nose, face, feet, and shoulders.

If you start feeling faint or light headed, get shade and drink water immediately. Remember you can burn even when it is cloudy. Wear sunglasses, and keep your eyes protected.

Stay together

You should be aware of where everyone in your group is at all times.

Do not leave your friends or family that you are vacationing with. If you are staying in a hotel, or at a new place, follow the buddy system and take someone with you wherever you go.

Have a plan

Know what their is to do in the place you are visiting. Create a plan to ensure you have the time to do all of the activities you want to do.

If you are traveling outside of the country, be sure that you have any vaccinations required for entering a new place.

Stay hydrated

Stay hydrated by drinking lots of water. Warning signs of dehydration include feeling thirsty, dry mouth, weakness, dizziness, and headache.

If you are out in the sun for a long period of time, you can drink sports drinks  to restore lost electrolytes.

Never flash your valuables

Valuables like cash, cards, and electronics should never be left in plain view. Keep these things in your car by storing them in the trunk.

When keeping these things with you, be cautious not to pull them out for everyone around you to know what you are carrying on you.

Stay alert

Be aware during any taxi, Uber, or other types of rides. Follow along on a navigation service, if you can, to ensure they are taking you the right direction.

If you ever feel unsafe, always trust your gut feeling. It is completely within your rights to abandon any ride service at a safe stop. Leave money behind and get out.

Pack wisely

It is better to risk over packing than to get to your destination and realize you have forgot things that you need. Sunscreen, flip flops, beach towels, and other necessities can easily cost twice as much as they usually do when you buy them at a tourist destination.
