Three boys’ relays earn state final invitations, McKay wins the 400 for final trip
Three of the boys’ relay teams and one individual Hornet qualified for the Division 1 track and field state final.
Those athletes will compete in the final at Rockford on May 30.
The Hornets strength clearly rested with its relays, which helped the track and field team to a ninth-place finish at the regional meet on May 15 at Davison.
Grand Blanc won the meet with 109 1/2 points, while Traverse City Central was runner-up with 65 points. Kearsley scored 45 1/2 points.
Kearsley’s only championship came from the 800-meter relay team.
The 800-relay team, consisting of sophomore Darrion Younger, junior Matt Parkinson, junior Deitrick Young, and junior Jonathan McKay ran a 1:31.05, beating runner-up Traverse City West by 0.81 seconds.
The 1600-relay team of McKay, senior Trevor Gehrig, junior Matt Worley, and Younger finished second in 3:27.84, getting edged out of first by 0.28 seconds by Grand Blanc.
In the 3200 relay, senior Anton Webster, McKay, Gehrig, and Younger ran a state-qualifying time of 8:06.9 even though the team finished fifth. The top six teams in the race qualified for the final.
The Hornets sole individual qualifier was McKay in the 400 dash. McKay finished second in 49.92 behind Midland Dow’s Nick Coon, who won it in 49.68.
Besides the state qualifiers, two individuals and one relay won regional medals, scoring for the Hornets.
