Boys’ thinclads win Goodrich Invite for the third consecutive year
The boys’ track and field team squeaked by Lapeer, winning the Goodrich Invitational one point on May 1.
Kearsley scored 101, Lapeer 100, Clio 94 1/2, and LakeVille 84 1/2 for the top four spots. It was the third year in a row Kearsley has won the meet.
A total of 11 school competed at the meet. Athletes that place sixth or better received medals.
The relay teams scored 36 points, and three relays had first-place finishes.
The 3200-meter relay team of junior Jonathan McKay, senior Anton Webster, sophomore Darrion Younger, and senior Trevor Gehrig finished in 8:38.5, taking first.
The 800 relay of McKay, junior Matt Parkinson, junior Deitrick Young, and Younger helped contribute to the team’s victory. They ran it in an 1:32.8, which was a winning time.
The 1600 relay of Webster, Younger, senior Trevor Gehrig and McKay, gave the Hornets their final first place of the meet running it in a 3:29.1. This was the relay the team’s best time of the season.
The 400 relay placed third. Senior Jason Clark, Parkinson, junior Matt Worley, and Young ran it in a 45.7.
Two individual victories came from Webster in the 400 meter (23.3), and senior Jaylen Shock in the shot put, throwing 45-fett, 2-inches.
Other medalists from the meet were junior Brandon Scales, placing second in the high jump (6-0), senior Alex Speer in shot put placed third (42-2), and Speer was sixth in the discus (110-1).
In the 200 dash, Younger placed fourth (23.3) and Parkinson followed right behind in fifth place with a time of 23.9.
In the 100 dash, Parkinson ran a 11.5, taking another 5th place, and Young took sixth with a 11.6.
Clark earned fourth in the 300 hurdles (43.7).
Gehrig got a personal record in the 800 run, placing third (2:05.5).
The top scorer of the night was Webster with 15 points, while Younger earned the second most points with 12 1/2.
The most outstanding performer goes to Gehrig for his personal record in the 800. The 1600-relay team earned the most outstanding runners for its season best, and the most outstanding field event went to Shock and Scales.
