Most students walk through the lunch line every day without giving a second thought to the people serving their meals. They get up extra early and work long hours to make sure that everyone is fed, yet many students only see them as the ones behind the counter. In reality, they are some of the most hard-working and caring people

in the building, always ready with a smile on their face, a kind word, or an extra scoop of mac and cheese when someone’s had a bad day. It is time we start recognizing the faces behind the food for everything they do!
“Serving the kids their wraps and seeing their smiling faces,” Ms. Limon said. “That is the best part of my day. It makes all the early mornings and long hours worth it.”
Students do not always realize how much care goes into each serving. Behind the hairnets and gloves are women who know students by name, remember orders, and build relationships. Their work is repetitive and often overlooked, yet it holds the heart of the school together one meal at a time.

“It’s all about the kids, knowing at least one student has one hot meal in their stomach is enough to make my day,” Ms. Firman said.
At the end of the day, lunch ladies do much more than serve us food. They bring familiarity and kindness to our school every single day. It might be easy to overlook them, but without their hard work, our days would never feel complete. The women in the cafeteria here at KHS truly are the best faces behind the food.
