As the curtain closes on this school year, the next is already being prepared. Off the coattails of this year’s Drama Club success, Don’t be Afraid of the Dark and Cinderella: The Musical, the Drama Club prepares to wow audiences once more with a new season. Mrs. Schroeder, a new addition to the club as of 2023, announced the upcoming shows this spring at the Choir Pops Concert. She announced that this upcoming season (2025-2026) the Drama Club will be performing Radium Girls as the fall play and The Wizard of Oz as the spring musical.
The Drama Club selected these plays due to their themes of teamwork and persistence, a reflection of the club and its members. Radium Girls, play by D.W. Gregory, is based around a real group of young women who were exposed to radium poisoning at their factory job in the 1920s. As the story progresses, the girls confront the corporation responsible for their poisoning, as well as their own personal conflicts.
Similarly, The Wizard of Oz (written by L. Frank Baum with Music and Lyrics by Harold Arlen and E. Y. Harburg), is known for its cultural impact as well as its timeless story. The musical depicts Dorothy and the gang as they explore Oz in the search for the wizard, and as they go through challenges, they learn how to rely on themselves and those closest to them. As demonstrated in these choices, this year the Drama Club is putting focus on the importance of teamwork, as that is the crux of Drama Club.
The Drama Club has taken teamwork on a personal level, as this year, the Drama Club and marching band have teamed up to create what Mrs. Schroeder called “The Year of Oz” in her announcement on May 15th. The band will be performing all songs from Wicked this year for their marching season.
This alignment directly links to the pattern with the Drama Club under new management, it seems that the performing arts are joining together. Both the Choir Department and the Band Department at KHS have been vital to the success and production of Cinderella: The Musical, the first dive back into musical theatre in over twenty years. All in all, the arts are joining forces and becoming better than ever before.
This coming fall more information about the production and its members will become available, especially for aspiring members and viewers alike. Keep an eye out for the club’s social media and marketing around the halls of KHS.
