Michael Whalen, born on June 29, 1998, in Flint, Michigan, embodies the spirit of lifelong learning, service, and cultural exploration. Describing Whalen in one word is nearly impossible, but the first word that comes to mind is dedicated. His journey from a curious teenager to a globally minded educator and community leader reveals a deep commitment to making a difference in the world. He has always been, and still is, dedicated to making an impact in the world.
Whalen’s first job, bussing tables at age 16, helped him build a strong work ethic. However, his aspirations reached far beyond the restaurant industry. Inspired by transformative teachers during his high school years, Whalen realized early on that he wanted to follow in their footsteps. Their support and encouragement during a challenging period of his life motivated him to pursue a career in education, where he could help others the way they had helped him. “My teachers were very important to me,” Expressed Whalen. “I always knew that I wanted to help other students the same way they helped me.”
At just 18 years old, while still a senior in high school, Whalen made history by becoming the youngest elected member of the Mt. Morris School Board. Over 11 years, he served in various leadership roles, including secretary, vice president, and president. “It all started because my teachers hated the administration they worked under,” Whalen commented, “so I decided to help them out and become the administration myself.” This experience provided him with a platform to advocate for teachers and students, especially during the economic recession when schools faced significant challenges.
Whalen’s passion for education extends far beyond the classroom. He has studied educational systems worldwide, visiting countries like Finland, Germany, China, India, and Sweden. In these travels, he has analyzed how societal values, trust in educators, and approaches to poverty impact student outcomes. Notably, his time in Finland left a profound impression, Whalen added that “Becoming a teacher in Finland is like becoming a doctor in America.” He observed how the country’s respect for the teaching profession fosters exceptional student achievement.
Teaching abroad also gave Whalen unique insights into cultural diversity. He spent a summer teaching in China, conducted professional development sessions with teachers in India, and visited schools across Europe. Each experience deepened his understanding of the global landscape of education and further fueled his desire to connect with people from different backgrounds.
Whalen’s travels have also enriched his perspective on life. Among the many places he has visited, Dharamshala, India, stands out as his favorite. Nestled in the mountains, Dharamsala is home to the Dalai Lama and a community of Tibetan exiles. Walking alongside monks and immersing himself in the serene beauty of the region profoundly moved him. Berlin, with its vibrant and youthful energy, is another highlight of his journeys.
Despite his many accomplishments, Whalen remains humble and focused on his overarching goal; making a positive impact, Whalen has always strived to make a difference whether it just be a small difference from day-to-day or something larger. “He might not know it, but going to AP Economics is one of the favorite parts of my day,” One of Whalen’s AP students; Lucas Groulx, noted. “I find Whalen really funny, he always makes my day better.”
Looking ahead, Whalen envisions a future shaped by curiosity and openness. Whether he continues teaching, pursues school administration, or explores a new path altogether, he is committed to following where life takes him. His bucket list includes participating in an extended meditation retreat, reflecting his dedication to personal growth and self-awareness.
Whalen represents the ideals of a teacher, leader, and lifelong learner. He serves as a reminder of the impact educators can have and the importance of embracing curiosity and compassion in all aspects of life.
