Mrs. Wolf is one of our art teachers here at Kearsley High School. She is creative, caring, funny, driven, hard working, and positive. She cares about all of her students and is always striving to be a better person. Wolf mentioned, “I try to always have a sense of humor, and to not hang on to negativity or bad moods for too long because they don’t serve you!” She creates a good environment in the classroom by being kind hearted.
Mrs. Wolf has always enjoyed art. She took art classes in high school, she stated “I had a really awesome art teacher, and I always loved being in his classes. It was so different from every other class I took. My teacher really encouraged our creativity and helped us have the freedom to put our own spin on every project. That really stuck with me, and seemed like something I thought I could make a career from.” Wolf really enjoys art and makes it fun for her students. Right now in her ceramics class her students are making teapots inspired by their favorite movies, tv shows, books, or sports for their exam. Just like her high school art teacher she lets her students put their own spin on their projects.
Wolf has made many projects and when asked what her best creation was she replied, “In high school a local business person bought us huge sheets of plywood to create large scale paintings that they were going to put in the windows of abandoned storefronts in downtown Flint. I spent two months creating a huge expressionist painting of a seaside landscape. It hung downtown for over a year. I was really proud of that project.” Mrs. Wolf is very talented and has made many amazing projects. She is very imaginative and can bring her visions to life.
Mrs. Wolf has a bachelor’s degree from Central Michigan University, a masters degree from Eastern Michigan University, and a graduate certificate in Human Resources from Michigan State University. She did not always want to be a teacher, she wanted to be a doctor or a physician’s assistant. Her original bachelor’s degree was in exercise physiology. With this degree she worked with cardiac patients to help them heal after they had a heart attack or surgery. Wolf commented, “I really loved that job, but I wanted to work more with younger people.”
Wolf worked at American Eagle for a little while in high school and then became a lifeguard and taught swimming lessons. She said she is “a people person by nature” and all the jobs she has had have been working with people and young kids. She believes this has pointed her to her career as a teacher. Mrs. Wolf has been teaching in the Kearsley school district for her whole career as a teacher. She has been teaching for 22 years, she started out working at the high school for a year but then moved to the middle school to be a health teacher after the prior health teacher was deployed.
In 2019 she moved back to the high school after the former art teacher retired. Wolf mentioned she was upset and worried at first because she was teaching at the middle school for so long, but now even if she had the chance she would not go back, she loves it at the high school and loves working with her students. Over the 22 years she has been teaching she has taught health, leadership, 6-8 grade drawing, intro to art, drawing and painting, studio art, and ceramics. Mrs. Wolf said she has enjoyed teaching each of these classes for different reasons.
Balancing school life and home life can be hard for teachers. Mrs. Wolf says it is difficult to leave work at work when you work with kids because her students feel like her own and she worries when her students have things going on and are having a hard time. She has learned that it is good to have a break from work.
To help balance work and home life she talks about her day with her family and then tries to let things go. Wolf also exercises most days which helps with stress and it helps her sleep better too. While running she loosely keeps track of her mileage and she keeps track of how long she runs. She has run several half marathons and she has finished a 15.5 miler. Wolf mentioned she would not particularly say she enjoys running but she likes how she feels after. In her free time she runs, spends time with family, watches her son play sports, and travels. She has been to Japan, Ireland, Mexico, Canada, Jamaica, Aruba, other Caribbean Islands, and several US states.
Mrs. Wolf is a beloved teacher here at KHS. She is still in contact with some of her students from the past and some even come to visit her once in a while. She loves hearing about students’ adventures after they have moved on. Mrs. Wolf would give her students the advice to. “Never give up on yourself. Remember mistakes aren’t really mistakes. They’re opportunities to try again, or do something differently to find success. Take every opportunity you have to travel, read, explore. Don’t be afraid to try something new! Don’t wait for things to happen. Sometimes we have to make our own luck!”
