Some teachers like to teach by the book but others like to teach by doing everything outside of the box. Mr. Christian does just that. He is a chemistry and physics teacher that loves to do different labs every chance he can get.
Mr. Christian says, “I think it is important to do science rather than read about it.”
Mr. Christian has always been the famous teacher that does all kinds of labs from blowing up pumpkins, making dippin dots, Valentines Day chocolate, carbide cannon, and limiting reactants using no bake cookies. All the students at Kearsley High School love to do all of these labs that Mr. Christian prepares every year. Some kids even look forward to doing all of these labs and being able to learn something different than just reading out of the book. I asked around at Kearsley High School to talk to some of Mr. Christian’s students to see how they feel about all of these fun and cool labs.
Senior, Jocelynn Smith states ,“I like the freedom that Mr. Christian gives us and that he trusts us. He leaves it up to us to figure out each step. Not only does it teach us the lesson, it also teaches us how to problem solve with a group to reach a common goal. It’s a great way to clarify the lessons he teaches us on paper, as it can be tricky to understand certain topics until you have hands-on experience.”
This is just one example of what many think when they take one of Mr. Christian’s, classes. Mr. Christian agrees that students learn different things in each lab that they would not learn by just reading the book.
Mr. Christian says, “they get to verify different theories they did in class and they can see how it is in everyday life. It teaches students different skills like measuring and cooking. It also teaches them how to be analytical.”
Mr. Christian has been working at Kearsley High School for 25 years. He has a true passion for Kearsley High School and teaching. Mr. Christian had taught in different places where he was able to share his passion other students and he has used all of his experiences to continue to teach in even better ways.
“I have taught in Indiana which is very different from the country school like Webberville or like a suburban school like Kearsley. I also taught in the Caribbean Island St. Thomas, which is different because the population is mostly native to the island. You can not travel easily because it is a very small island. Teaching in all of these places created a nice tool box to use when needed for different approaches.”
Mr. Christian has put in a lot of work by working around the United States and trying to figure out different ways for students to have a better understanding of science. By doing these things it just shows how passionate Mr. Christian is in teaching and Kearsley High School supports just that.
“I am very passionate about science and the way Kearsley supports the science department and they demonstrate their support by building a new science wing addition and providing resources like chemicals. That really has been a key factor in the way I am passionate about Kearsley. I am very passionate about doing chemistry in the lab, not just reading about science.”
Besides just everyday teaching Mr. Christian has unique hobbies, he does wood burning, making homemade vanilla and hunting. He uses these hobbies everyday. He even makes some wood burning objects for students and staff members. He does wood burning about 2-3 times a week. He also goes hunting almost every week in November.
Mr. Christian is just one of the many amazing teachers at Kearsley High School. All of the students and staff love to see the new and exciting ways Mr. Christian comes up with teaching students how science can be fun and used in everyday life
