As the fall season comes to an end, the leaves are falling, and winter starts to settle in, excitement begins to builds up in the school for the upcoming winter sports season. With a variety of sports to play, an athlete has many opportunities to develop new skills and new talents. The sports for the winter season are: girls basketball, boys basketball, bowling, boys swim, wrestling, and competitive cheer.
The boys basketball team is hyped for this season. Last year the boys won districts! This year they are coming back for more. Tryouts for the team were Monday, November 11th and Tuesday, November 12th. They have already started working hard during their practices and creating their bonds with the new team. Their first game of the season is away at Milford High School, on Tuesday, November 26, 2024. It starts at 7pm. Reporters asked junior Cooper Forsberg what his main goal is for the season. “One of my main goals is to be successful and establish a better understanding of basketball as a team.”
The girls basketball team is ready to come back better than ever. Tryouts for the team occurred, Monday, November 18th and Tuesday, November 19th. One key element for this team is teamwork, and this year they have it. Their first game of the season is away at Port Huron High School, on Monday December 2nd, at 5:30pm. Reporters asked senior Makenzie Brandt how does she overcome challenges in games and practice. “I just take a minute to myself and breathe to relax.”
Competitive cheer season is finally here. This team is all about teamwork, all the girls are close with each other and are there for the same reasons. They have been working very hard since sideline season and now are ready to show you what they have in store. Their first competition is December 14th, place and time are still to be determined.
Reporters asked senior Sophia DePottey how she feels since its her last season of cheer and her sister is the coach. “ It makes me happy, I get to spend my last cheer season with my sister as a coach, she really pushes me and my team to do better. Overall, I’m excited to see how our team will do with all the love and support we have with each other,” DePottey added.
The boys swim season is approaching. Our swim team is combined with Lake Fenton and this year we have a lot of boys wanting to swim. Their first meet is home against Ovid-Elsie High School, on Tuesday, December 10th, at 6pm. Reporters asked junior Derek Buterakos what he is excited for this season. “I’m excited to be a full time captain, bond with my teammates, and help them become better. I’m also excited to get the new swimmer a spot on the team and help them become better and hopefully make a new record on the record board,” he replied.
The girls and boys are ready for this bowling season. Last year the boys won states back to back, and this year could be their third year in a row! Their girls and boys first match is to be determined. Reporters questioned junior Joseph Morris about what excites him about this upcoming season. “To have fun with my friends because it’s not always about winning. The season gets more serious towards finals and tournaments.”
Wrestling is an exciting time for athletes and fans alike. The boys and the girls on the wrestling team come together to try and get the most points possible. Some of the boys on the team go to states every year. The team has been putting in the hard work and has been practicing every day working very hard. Their first meet is home against Corunna, on December 4th, at 6pm. We asked senior Jamarion Richards what is his motivation before each meet. He said, “visualizing the success and musi helps keep me calm and confident.” voiced Richards.
Good luck to all the athletes this upcoming winter season!
