At this time of the year, Kearsley High School students are thrilled about homecoming. There are many events that take place during Kearsley’s homecoming week. One tradition everyone looks forward to is the homecoming proposals for the dance. The students have come up with some creative ideas this year. Students put in a lot of effort to bring their visions to life.
Freshman Jesus (Tony) Martinez asked freshman Eva Caldwell to the homecoming dance. Caldwell explained Martinez asked her with music and a sign by the soccer field. Martinez mentioned he asked her with a sign that said “Once upon a dream we went to Hoco.” This is Martinez’s first time giving a proposal and Caldwell’s first time receiving a proposal. Martinez explained that his family helped him come up with the idea as well. Caldwell stated that she was surprised. Since they are both freshmen, this is their first time going to a homecoming dance. They are both excited for the music. Martinez announced he is also excited about the experience.
Many of the students had some very well thought out plans when asking someone to homecoming. Junior, Cole Fernandez was one of these people. Fernandez asked junior Maggie Newark to homecoming. This is Newark’s first year receiving a homecoming proposal. Fernandez explained, “I thought of balloons that will guide Mags to me, while she will follow the path of balloons, I will be playing her favorite songs. I would be holding the poster too.” Fernandez commented that Newark had mentioned she wanted a poster beforehand. Fernandez also mentioned that this was their first year anniversary and it needed to be special. Maggie expressed that she was surprised. This is a great example of a very well-planned and thoughtful homecoming proposal.
This isn’t the first homecoming for some students. Senior Audrina Grathoff was surprised by senior Cameron Welch’s homecoming proposal this year. Welch reported that he purchased an inflatable Olaf suit and surprised Grathoff at her house. He was asked how he got this idea and he replied “I thought of a Disney movie that is popular and made the sign and bought the costume.” Grathoff also conveyed that this is her 3rd year receiving a proposal from Welch.
He explains that in their sophomore year, he dressed up as Dwight. In their junior year, he dressed up as Frozone. Grathoff commented, “I knew he would do something unique, but I didn’t know that he would get a big inflatable costume.” Both Grathoff and Welch expressed that they are most excited to dress up this year for the dance.
This year, there were some very unexpected homecoming proposals. Sophomore Chloe Welsh was very surprised by junior Aiden Schriner. This is Welsh’s first year receiving a homecoming proposal. Welsh reported that Schriner asked her after the football game. Welsh mentioned, “he took off his shoulder pads and under his shirt it said “hoco?” Schriner explains that he had some inspiration from his teammate senior Jackson Stanley who gave his homecoming proposal the week prior. Schriner stated, “ I wanted to do a proposal that I’ve never done before, and that one was out of the ordinary.”
The students of Kearsley High School did an impressive job creating their homecoming proposals this year. There were many clever, and very original ideas. Each year, students come up with more creative and fresh concepts for their homecoming proposals. Overall, the students enjoyed their proposals as well as the dance. As the years go on, the students of Kearsley High School will continue to use their imagination and come up with new and innovative ideas.
