Irwin challenges daylight saving time
State Rep. Jeff Irwin (D – Ann Arbor) is currently attempting to pass a bill to eliminate daylight saving time in the state of Michigan.
Irwin introduced the bill on March 11.
According to timeanddate.com, recent studies have shown that daylight saving time causes an increased risk of heart attacks and depression as well as more road accidents.
The risk for heart attacks increases about 24 percent when gaining an hour and the risk decreases 21 percent when losing an hour.
Many other states such as Arizona and Hawaii use the standard time rather than daylight saving time.
Daylight saving may also decrease energy usage. A 2006 study in Indiana showed the opposite.
The change in time currently causes the use of energy to rapidly increase.
Passing this bill is said to not only save energy in the state but also money.
If the bill is passed, Michigan will switch the standard time of the zone it is located in.
This means Michigan will always use Eastern Standard Time rather than switching to Eastern Daylight Time in the winter.
Students have mixed feelings about the change.
Junior Jacob Harmon said, “I don’t think it will make much of a difference. But we should continue to use it because I’m used to it.”
Others feel switching to Eastern Standard Time could be a bad thing.
Senior Makayla Roster said, “I don’t see the point in having it.”
Roster believes the potential harms it may cause are reason enough to switch to the standard time of the zone.
