Wrestlers place at individual district tournament, qualify for regional

Saturday, Feb. 15, The wrestling team competed in an MHSAA Division 3 individual district tournament at Fenton Saturday, Feb. 15.

Seniors La’Ron Ruffin (135), John Brown (171), Trenton DiGenova (152), junior Rodney Richards (145), and freshman Dominik DiGenova (215) qualified for the MHSAA Division 3 individual regional tournament.

Ruffin and Richards went undefeated, placing first in their weight classes.

Ruffin won by pin, a 16-1 decision, and by a forfeit. He finished with 12 nearfall points, five takedowns, and one reversal during the tournament.

Richards won 16-5, 7-6, and then by void due to disqualification based on unsportsmanlike conduct. He had nine takedowns and two escapes.

Brown went 3-1 during the tournament, placing third and winning by pin, a 17-2 decision, and a 10-1 decision and then losing 8-4 to Goodrich. He had 12 nearfall points, six takedowns, one reversal, and three escapes.

Trenton also placed third with a 4-1 record in the tournament, winning by pin, a 13-2 decison, a 3-0 decision, and a 9-3 decision. He lost 8-4 against Linden. He had 17 nearfall points, three takedowns, one reversal, and three escapes.

Dominik placed second with a 2-1 record, winning by pins and then losing by pin in the championship match to Lake Fenton. He had two takedowns during the tournament.

Sophomore Kaleb Gettings (130) went 2-2 in the tournament, winning by pin and a 12-0 decision and losing matches to Imlay City and St Clair by scores of 4-3 and 7-4, respectively.

Senior Amari Douglas (171) went 2-2, winning by pin and a 7-5 margin. He lost by pin to Croswell-Lexington and then by pin to Brown in the qualifying match.

Freshman Jacob Mosher lost both of his matches, losing 17-0 to Goodrich and by pin to Notre Dame Prep.

The MHSAA Division 3 individual regional tournament will be hosted by Gaylord Saturday, Feb. 22.
