Students and staff at KHS debate the right time to begin listening to Christmas music.

When is the right time to start listening to Christmas music?

Almost everybody loves Christmas music, but when to start listening to these tunes is where the debating starts.

Some say that as soon as Halloween ends they jam out to their favorite Christmas songs, while others like to wait until December has started.

There are many different reasons for people to listen to Christmas music earlier than some would recommend.

For example, some people listen to Christmas music just to get into the Christmas spirit, or to make them happy and lift their mood.

Sophomore Sarah Bouchard thinks Christmas music should be listened to earlier than some would deem appropriate.

Sophomore Sarah Bouchard said she starts listening to Christmas music Oct. 31 at 11:59 p.m. because there isn’t any Thanksgiving music.

Bouchard’s favorite Christmas song is “All I Want for Christmas is You” by Mariah Carey.

Mrs. Mary Riley, geometry and calculus teacher, has a similar opinion to Bouchard to when Christmas music should start being played.

“I started listening to it after Halloween,” Riley said.

Riley’s favorite Christmas song is “What Child is This” by Andrea Bocelli.

Bouchard and Riley feel that people should get into the Christmas spirit before the holiday season starts.

On the other hand, some students feel it’s better to wait until Christmas is nearing.

Sophomore Keneddy Pearson believes that Christmas music should start being played closer to the holiday.

Pearson wants both Thanksgiving and Christmas to be celebrated equally.

“Christmas music should start being played after Thanksgiving,” Pearson said. “I don’t want to downplay another holiday.”

Sophomore Kimberly Harvey thinks Christmas music should be listened to no earlier than December.

Pearson’s favorite Christmas song is “Carol of the Bells” by Trans-Siberian Orchestra.

Pearson does not stand alone with her opinion.

Sophomore Kimberly Harvey agrees that Christmas music should be saved for the holiday.

Harvey said that she thinks Christmas music should start being listened to a week into December because then everybody is ready for Christmas.

Harvey’s favorite Christmas song is “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer” by Johnny Marks.

Pearson and Harvey both think if it’s not close to the holiday then you shouldn’t listen to the music.

They don’t want to make it seem like it is Christmas too early on, they want to savor the music when the time is right.
