Ramey leads girls track and field at SVSU
Junior Mackenzie Ramey earned her first victory in shot put this year while some of her teammates placed in the top three in three other events.
Overall, Kearsley track and field athletes did well in the 1200-meter relay, 60-meter dash, 200 dash, and shot put.
The girls competed in their first invitational Thursday, March 22, at Saginaw Valley State University for an indoor invitational. Despite the invitational not being scored, the athletes did compete for medals.
Ramey led the Hornets, setting a personal record in shot put. She threw 38 feet and took first place in a field of 53 athletes.
Ramey is proud to throw a personal best to start the season.
“I feel so accomplished about setting a new personal record,” Ramey said. “It makes me want to work so much harder because I’m just that much closer to breaking the school record, and that’s, for sure, my next goal.”
The record is 41-3.25, which was set in 1997 by Tianna Kirkland.
Ramey’s toss is the third best in school history.
Wendy Gean’s put of 38-1 in 1996 is the second best throw.
The relay team consisted of freshmen Linnearia Richards and Sanaii Walker and sophomores Stacie Tipton and Sierra Walker. They placed third out of 25 teams with a time of 3:04.27.
Sanaii also competed in two other events, the 60 and 200 dashes, taking second in each one.
In the 60, Sanaii’s time was 8.15 seconds, following behind the winner, Payten Williams from Bridgeport with a time of 7.83.
In the 200, Sanaii finished with a time of 26.13. The winner of this race was also Bridgeport’s Williams, finishing in 25.68.
Kearsley will appear next, at home, April 11 for the Harry Burnet Relays at 4 p.m.
