Social media will affect employment

Besides pride, future employment could also be a loss from inappropriate social media posts.

Most employers research a person on social media before hiring or enrolling the person.

According to a study from CareerBuilder, 70 percent of employers look at social media before hiring, which has risen from 60 percent in 2016.

One in three people have not been hired due to something that an employer found on their social media.

Employers look for qualifications, inappropriate photos, drug or alcohol use, criminal behavior, and even grammar mistakes.

Although poor profiles will prevent being hired, employers are much less likely to hire someone who is a ghost online, meaning people who keep their profiles private or do not have any social media accounts.

Mr. Chris Cooke, owner of HuronWeb Printing and Graphics, looks to social media for his hiring process.

“You want to make sure you are hiring the individual you think you are hiring,” he said.

Cooke looks for a long list of things on social media.

“We look for their educational background, political views, criminal records, and who they socialize with,” Cooke said.

Cooke also checks the social media for his current employees as well, making sure they stay out of trouble.

“We want to know what they (the employees) are saying,” Cooke said.

Social media is not all bad when looking for a job, though.

There are ways to make social media help a person’s image. Forty-four percent of employers say that they have hired someone based on their social media.

Many employers encourage people looking for jobs to use social media to their advantage. Many employers also say that people should clean up their social media to look both professional and responsible.

Employers will be happy to see that a person’s social media personality matches the personality that they have projected in real life and to see great communication skills, a professional image, and creativity on social media.
