On Dec. 23, Sony Pictures Entertainment confirmed that it would release “The Interview” on various platforms and in select theaters for a limited time.

Previously, Sony had stated that it would not be releasing “The Interview” after hackers broke into Sony’s online network and posted threats to movie theaters that were planning to show the movie, and The Eclipse reported On Dec. 22 that Sony canceled the Christmas Day release of “The Interview.”

“It has always been Sony’s intention to have a national platform on which to release this film,” said Sony Entertainment CEO Michael Lynton in a statement released to the press.

Sony reached out to partners such as Microsoft and Google to help release the film in a new way that would not only benefit Sony, but its partners as well.

On Dec. 24, the movie went live on Google Play, YouTube Movies, Xbox Video, on a website called SeeTheInterview.com, and in select theaters.

People could rent the movie for $5.99 or buy it for $14.99 beginning at 10 a.m. Pacific Standard Time.

Over the holiday weekend, “The Interview” made $15 million in online sales and $2.8 million in theater sales.
