Girls track and field wins tie-breaker for K-O Clash

Athletes from the boys and girls track and field teams celebrate with the K-O Clash trophy after the girls’ one-point victory clinched the trophy for Kearsley. It’s the second year in a row Kearsley won the clash.

The girls track and field team squeezed past Owosso 69-68 at home Friday, April 28, as part of the K-O Clash, which is a competition between all spring sports among the two schools.

The school with the most victories takes home a special trophy.

Kearsley and Owosso were tied in the competition and the girls track meet was the event decided ahead of time to be the tie-breaking event for who would win the trophy. The one-point track victory gave the Hornets its second consecutive K-O Clash victory.

Seniors Aver McKay and Savannah Jones led the team to victory, scoring 16.25 and 11 points, respectively.

McKay took first place in all four events she was a part of, which included the 100-meter dash, the 200, the 400, and the 1600 relay. McKay finished with a time of 13.46 in the 100, 27.18 in the 200, and 1:02.43 in the 400.

The relay team ran the 1600 in 4:33.65. The team consisted of McKay, Madison Jordan, Amelia Boggs, and Stacia Tipton.

Jones scored 11 points among three events. She ran the 1600 and 3200 and pole vaulted in the meet.

Jones won the 3200 with a time of 14:02.43 and took second in the 1600 with a time of 6:30.71.

Kearsley swept the pole event with seniors Alexis Schwartz, Jones, and Kaitlyn Alburtus taking first, second, and third, respectively. Schwartz vaulted 7 feet, as well as Jones, and Alburtus vaulted 6-06.

Freshman Sydney Walker took first in the long jump with a distance of 14-02, as well as third in the high jump, jumping 4-02.

Senior Madison White took second in the 100 and 300 meter hurdles with a time of 19.83 and 55.05, respectively.

As well as being a part of the 1600-winning relay team, Tipton and junior Madison Jordan placed third in their open events. Tipton ran the 200 in 29.95 and Jordan finished the 400 in 1:05.80.

Freshmen Nisha Hartley placed first in the 800, with a time of 2:53.40, and Ava Kelsey took third in the 3200, running it in 15:21.03.

In the 100 hurdles, sophomroe Briahna Greer ran 21.44 for second place.

Sophomore Mackenzie Ramey won the shot put, a personal record of 34-10.

Sophomore Mary Wheeler placed first in discus setting a personal record of 93-00. Junior Barbara Hawes placed third with a distance of 77-10.

Kearsley is 3-1 overall, 2-1 in the Metro League.

The Hornets will appear next on May 5 at Brandon High School. The meet starts at 4 p.m.
