Online study tools benefit students

Every student needs to study but no one wants to drag their textbooks home with them. That is where online study tools come in handy.

While in no particular order, here are five online study tools that every student should take advantage of.

1. Quizlet

Quizlet is a free site that offers games and study programs to assist students in learning the necessary material for almost every class under the sun.

The site also allows students and teachers to create their own sets of words and share them with their classmates.

A more recent feature, called Quizlet Live, allows multiple students or an entire classroom to compete on teams through mobile devices. Teammates can help each other with the vocabulary terms and push their way to the top.

The team that finishes first wins. It is a fun and competitive way to learn together as a class.

Junior Megan Millinkov enjoys using Quizlet to study.

“I like using Quizlet because it has different study tools like flashcards, definitions, matching games, and anyone can add stuff, so there’s a lot of material to study,” Millinkov said.

2. StudyStack

StudyStack is another free site that allows students and teachers to create flashcards.

Users search for the class they want to find flashcards for and click on the set they would like to use. From there they can flip through them until they feel that they know the material.

3. Hippocampus

Hippocampus has thousands of educational videos that cover 13 subject areas anywhere from biology to mathematics. They make learning fun and provide good information for students to use in their studying.

Aside from videos, there are also simulations and activities for students to use. These help to make the connection between knowing how something works and actually seeing what it looks like.

4. Duolingo

This is a free online tool made especially for anyone who has a foreign language class or wants to learn another language.

Duolingo offers 23 languages to all of its users for free. The site teaches a word, plays it aloud, and asks the user to repeat it back through the microphone.

After you complete a level, you go on to the next one. Each time the user completes a level, there are points. In addition, power-ups can be bought.

It is offered as both a website and an app, giving everyone the chance to use it.

Ms. Caitlin Hudgins, Spanish teacher, uses Duolingo in the classroom.

“It allows students to work at their own pace, which is awesome,” Hudgins said. “I like Duolingo, but after a certain point it definitely does get harder and students have to be willing to work on it to keep things going,”

5. Schooltraq

Schooltraq is an easy-to-use site that allows users to track their tests, quizzes, and other assignments.

The best way to remain organized is to use a digital planner, like Schooltraq. It makes it easy to keep track of when there are assignments due and for what classes as it can be synced between your phone and computer.

With Schooltraq, you’ll never have to worry about a late assignment again.
