Spencer Wolfe shreds gender roles through makeup
Waking up early to the sound of his alarm is one of his favorite things.
After the alarm goes off, senior Spencer Wolfe tumbles out of bed.
He walks over to his makeup desk and begins applying his makeup to his face.
This has been a part of Wolfe’s schedule for the past two years.
“Makeup is an art to me,” Wolfe said.
Being a boy and being interested in makeup is normally frowned upon, but this doesn’t stop Wolfe.
“I think more boys should get into makeup,” Wolfe said.
Surprisingly, he hasn’t faced much backlash about being male and doing makeup.
When he told his grandpa that he was interested in doing makeup, his response was that it was a good profession to go into.
The only negative thing he’s gotten from his grandma, Mrs. Virginia Wolfe, is that she hates how he is better at makeup than she is.
“I think what Spencer does is amazing. He puts a lot of girls’ makeup to shame,” Virginia said. “I hope he continues with it and makes a career out of it.”
Wolfe has taught himself everything he knows by either watching YouTube videos or just sitting in front of a mirror and trying new things out.
Being bullied is a big fear for a lot of gay teens like Wolfe.
“I was bullied a lot in seventh grade, once I came out as gay, to the point where I tried to commit suicide,” Wolfe said.
Luckily, his attempts failed and he couldn’t be happier.
“I have thicker skin now and don’t let comments hurt me,” Wolfe said. “If people have something negative to say, they can say it to my face. But it’s not going to change how I feel.”
Wolfe’s bold makeup and confidence is loved by those around him.
“My favorite thing about him is his personality,” senior Madison Kilpatrick said. “He’s always cheerful and sweet and always in a positive attitude.”
When Wolfe wears makeup, he usually gets dirty looks from boys at school. But that’s not the case with Senior Jeremy Stephens.
“He’s creative with it,” Stephens said about Wolfe’s makeup.
Wolfe’s family is supportive of his interest in makeup.
“My grandma buys some of my makeup, but I do pay for some of it,” Wolfe said.
Wolfe loves doing makeup, from beauty to special effects makeup.
His dream profession is to be a makeup artist.
He watches many male makeup artists on YouTube such as Patrick Starrr, Jeffree Star, James Charles, and Manny MUA.
Wolfe said that the more you practice at makeup, the better you get.
In addition, Wolfe feels that even if people dislike what he’s doing, it doesn’t mean it’s wrong.
“If you ain’t got any haters, you ain’t doing anything right,” Wolfe said.
