Students can enjoy winter activities in Michigan

If you are looking for a fun activity to do this winter, think about getting out of town for a few hours.

Detroit Wild Lights

The Detroit Wild Lights are a perfect way to get in the holiday spirit while visiting your favorite furry friends.

Juniors Marysa Gatica and Madison Jordan visited the Detroit Wild Lights on Saturday, Dec. 3, 2016.

Detroit Wild Lights has more than six million LED lights, illuminated trees, buildings, and over 100 animal light displays throughout the zoo.

Detroit Wild Lights has more to offer than just their lights.

“I had so much fun looking at all the lights, seeing all the Christmas lights put me in the Christmas spirit,” Gatica said.

Live entertainment, seasonal refreshments, and ice carvings are also available to those who want to see more than just the lights.

“There was more to do than I thought there would be,” Jordan said. “I figured there would just be the lights to see, but there was hot chocolate and really cool ice carvings.”

Tickets for the lights are $9 per person in advance or $11 at the gate. Children under 2 are admitted free.

The times you can visit the lights are from 5:30 to 9 p.m. on Dec. 20-23 and 26-31.

Frankenmuth

Frankenmuth is the Christmas town in Michigan. This tourist attraction is always decked out for the holidays.

Senior Dena Hussein and her family enjoy taking an annual trip to Frankenmuth.

While in Frankenmuth, the Hussein family likes to walk around the town.

They also like to go to Frankenmuth for the iconic Snow Fest.

One of Frankenmuth’s most popular events in the Snow Fest involves ice sculptures and holiday refreshments.

The Snow Fest has many unique ice sculptures from animals to iconic figures.

“I love seeing all the ice sculptures,” Hussein said. “They never disappoint.”

Frankenmuth is also commonly known for Bronner’s Christmas Wonderland. Bronner’s is an ornament Christmas store that is great for avid Christmas decorators.

All ornaments can be inscribed with personal greetings. There are millions of ornaments, ranging from food and sports to weddings and animals.

Hussein and her family also enjoy going to Bronner’s Christmas Wonderland, and grabbing a bite at Zehnder’s.

“I love walking down all the aisles and seeing all the ornaments,” Hussein said. “It’s a tradition that me and my family pick out an ornament each year.”

Zehnder’s is a family restaurant located in the middle of the town that offers chicken dinners and a buffet.

The North Pole Express

The North Polar Express in Owosso is one of the many Polar Express trains in the United States.

The train ride was an hour each way with a two-hour drop off in the Village of Ashley’s Country Christmas.

Ashley’s Country Christmas resembled Crossroads Village and was made of up of stores that sold homemade crafts and pastries.

Freshman Makenzie Brooke enjoyed the train, but enjoyed the town more.

“The train ride was fun, but there was no Christmas lights on the way there like I expected,” Brooke said. “I really enjoyed Ashley, there was a lot to do.”

The North Pole Express holds about 800 people, with a series of passenger cars.

Passengers can ride in economy, coach, cocoa, or private caboose class, depending on how much they want to spend on their tickets.

The North Pole Express is sold out for this year, but this is still a wonderful experience everyone should do at least once.

These are a few ideas of the many things to do in Michigan during Christmas time.
