Virtual reality immerses gamers in artificial worlds
Virtual reality, known as VR, has intrigued people for several decades and has been used since the mid 1930s.
VR is an artificial world that consists of images and sounds created by a computer.
Artificial worlds , VRs, were first used to explore science fiction.
With the advancement of technology throughout the years, VR has been able to increase its realism and improve the feeling that the user is part of an artificial world.
The newest product of VR is the VIVE, produced by HTC (a cell phone company) and Valve (a video game developer and digital distribution company).
VIVE is the the most involved VR technology to date.
The VIVE is just a headset that the user puts on, similar to goggles.
While the user has the headset on, there are two sensors that track the user’s hand movement the most.
When users wear VIVE, they control the camera angle in the video game by looking around.
Users are able to move the camera in all directions, making it seem like they are in the artificial world.
The only major setback of the new VIVE is that the user can only stay stationary while being able to slightly walk around. The controllers control most of the movement.
However, there is a company called Virtuix, creating a product that enables a VR user to be able to walk and run in the artificial worlds. The product is called the Omni.
The Omni, in the most simplest way, is like a treadmill that allows the user to run in all directions.
With the combination of VIVE and Omni, VR has become incredibly advanced.
Gamers now feel like they are actually part of the video game they are playing.
Senior Jacob Rhoads is excited to check out this new technology.
“As a big gamer, it is obvious that VIVE is truly amazing technology,” Rhoads said. “This will allow us gamers to get a better and more realistic view of the game.”
