Senior Coi Jenkins signed his Letter of Intent to wrestle at Olivet College on Thursday, May 12.

When asked if he ever thought he would go to college for wrestling, Jenkins gave a surprising answer.

“No, I did not,” Jenkins said. “Now, that’s not me saying that I wasn’t good enough or capable of competing in the collegiate level, but saying that I had no name for myself coming into the season. The only name I really had for myself was toward basketball.”

Jenkins was an individual Flint Metro League champion and also qualified for the individual state final.

In addition, he was a key member of Kearsley’s league and district championship teams.

At Olivet, Jenkins will wrestle at the NCAA Division III level.

The Comets are members of the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association.

MIAA was founded in 1888, making it the oldest collegiate athletic conference in the United States.

“I’m nervous,” Jenkins said. “I hope I can fill a spot on the roster, but I am also excited to meet and experience new competition.”

Jenkins wrestled in the 125-pound weight class this past season, but said that he might wrestle at 133 while in college.

While at Olivet, Jenkins plans to pursue a degree in business. More specifically, insurance and risk.

To junior Nickole Sarginson, a friend of Jenkins’, being proud is an understatement.

“Coi has worked so hard and has always had a passion for sports,” Sarginson said. “He really puts himself into everything, especially wrestling, and I am beyond proud of him for taking his passion beyond high school.”

In gratitude, Jenkins added how thankful he is for the support he has received throughout his wrestling career in high school.

“I really do thank everybody around me, from my coaches to my family, to my friends and their families,” Jenkins said. “I’m very thankful for every person who has been a part of my life, so so thankful.”
