My open letter to the Democratic nominee
March 24, 2016
To whomever is the Democratic presidential nominee:
I have some opinions on your nomination.
Foreign Policy
Please keep us safe, but not in fear.
There is no need to be a fearmonger.
Keep war as a last resort.
America is not the police force of the world, do not intervene in situations that may not concern us.
Immigration
We have a great nation. But understand that others also want a shot at the opportunities we offer.
You cannot help where you are born. Let those escaping war find a safe place to live.
Everyone deserves a fresh start. And building a wall will do nothing but cause conflict.
Health Care
Health care is a human right.
Everyone — young or old, rich or poor — should be able to afford treatments.
Universal health care works well in several other prosperous countries.
All people, of all genders, races, and ages, deserve equal coverage.
National Debt
Do not make promises that you cannot keep.
Protect future generations by using the budget surplus to pay off debt.
Social security, Medicare, and tax cuts for families need to be kept in place.
Unemployment
A huge issue with unemployment in our country is because big businesses are shipping their jobs overseas.
It is important that there is a tax on businesses trying to take the cheap way out by not employing our own people.
Our country cannot prosper if people cannot find jobs.
This should be one of the No. 1 concerns if you become president.
“Reaching across the aisle” may be necessary with this topic, but it would be worth it.
Taxes
It is not a radical idea that big businesses and Wall Street should be paying their fair share.
Monopolizing the markets is not what America is about.
Small, local businesses should have a chance.
The wealthy should be paying their fair share.
Hard-working people trying to provide for their families should not be thrown into the mud because they were dealt a bad card.
Environment
Our planet needs protection.
Our animals need protection.
Our upcoming generations need protection.
Something needs to be done before it is too late.
Global warming is real, and more and more animals are becoming endangered.
The voiceless cannot protect themselves. It is our duty to do so for them.
Gun Control
It is ridiculous that this is even still a topic of discussion.
Please take the necessary precautions to protect us from our own people.
Close the loopholes that often result in people purchasing guns when they should not be.
Hold parents accountable when their children access guns.
We are too often hearing about mass shootings in the news, so why are people trying to stop legislative action to keep us safe?
Gun dealerships should be much more strict on who can buy a gun.
Buyers should provide their reasoning for purchasing their guns and have witnesses that can vouch for them being responsible enough.
Each week, an average of nine women are shot and killed by their husbands.
Something needs to be done about this.
We are all counting on you to make it happen.
Planned Parenthood
Planned Parenthood needs to be funded.
Planned Parenthood provides much more than just abortions.
Women seek help on making the right decisions for themselves.
STD and cancer screenings are available there.
Women are able to seek advice on abusive relationships and several other things.
Even if you disagree with abortion, Planned Parenthood is more than just that. It provides help to real people.
Miscellaneous
It is 2016 and women are still only making 79 cents to a man’s dollar.
This is unbelievable and needs to be changed.
A woman should not be paid less for doing the same work as a man solely because she is female.
Along with equal pay, both women and men should be allowed time off work when they have a child.
Paid maternity and paternity leave is important.
Parents should not have to sacrifice time with their newborn for their job just so they can make sure they have money.
Along with this, there are several other rights women should have that they do not.
When it comes to abortions, women should have the right to their own bodies.
If a women does not feel safe, financially secure, or like she could provide a decent life for her baby, she should be able to make the decision to abort.
I am rooting for you.
Please keep the people in mind and keep your word.
