Students view Valentine’s Day in different ways

Valentine’s Day is a day that symbolizes the love that you have for your significant other and gives you a chance to express your love for them in a way that you would not normally do on an average day.

But what makes Valentine’s Day such a special day?

Senior Cj Forsberg, does not feel any differently about Valentine’s Day and treats the holiday like it is an ordinary day.

“Other than the fact that it is my grandmother’s birthday,” Forsberg said, “it should not be treated as if it were a special day.”

However, Claire Zuwala, senior, does not agree with Forsberg’s opinion and believes the holiday is a chance for someone to feel adored.

“Valentine’s Day is a special day because it reserves a day to make your significant other feel special and loved,” Zuwala said.

Senior Shayla Daly agrees with both Forsberg and Zuwala’s opinions on the subject.

“I think that Valentine’s Day is both an ordinary and special day,” Daly said. “What your significant other does for you that day makes it special, but it is ordinary because you would not love them any differently.”

Typically before or on Valentine’s Day, many people will dash off to their local store to spend money on special gifts like chocolates, flowers, and teddy bears that in someway expresses their love for their significant other.

Should you treat your significant other any differently on Valentine’s Day because it is a day that symbolizes love?

Zuwala stands strong by the idea of not treating someone any differently.

“I do not think that you should treat them (your significant other) any differently because then it seems like you are faking it every other day,” Zuwala said.

Senior Kaylen Lumley agrees with Zuwala’s opinion on not treating them any differently solely because of it being a holiday.

“If you truly love the person, then every day you should take time to appreciate them, and not just because it is a holiday,” Lumley said.

Daly is more aware of the love that she has for her significant other on Valentine’s Day.

“It makes me appreciate my love for him that much more,” Daly said.

Lumley believes that Valentine’s Day is too commercialized.

“It is just an excuse to make people spend more money on things that you would not normally buy,” Lumley said. “It takes away from the real meaning of the holiday, which is to appreciate having someone you love in your life.”

Valentine’s Day gives Zuwala a chance to express her love for her significant other.

“Little acts of love day to day go a long way,” Zuwala said. “But if you add in some flowers or a special act of love on Valentine’s Day, it makes the relationship grow stronger.”
