Are high heels worth it?

As the years go on, more and more information regarding why women should not wear high heels has been emerging.

It is not stopping many women, however.

For years, heels have been worn as a symbol of class.

For short women especially, high heels are generally worth it.

They give the appearance of longer, thinner legs.

Even though wearing heels can affect a woman’s healthy negatively, some women are willing take the poor health effects over ditching their favorite pair of pumps.

A study done by Women’s Health magazine proved that heels do not only affect your feet and ankles but also your knees, hips, and back.

Shoving your feet into heels is often painful for women.

Junior Brandi Morgan said, “I would rather not wear them because your feet hurt after a while and you can still look just as cute and classy with flats on.”

However, Morgan does wear heels for formal occasions.

Prolonged wearing of heels can result in  shortened Achilles tendons, making even wearing flats uncomfortable.

The stance you have to take to wear heels does damage to your hips and spine.

For many women, heels can be an essential part of their outfit.

For many women, heels can be an essential part of their outfit.

The hip bones must move in a way different than intended.

However, for some girls, this is a small price to pay.

Junior Brittney Dick would be willing to suffer through the pain of heels if they completed her outfit.

Other girls feel this way too, including sophomore Sydney Wharram.

“Heels are totally worth it once you learn how to walk in them,” Wharram said.

For me, wearing wedges instead of pumps or stilettos causes less strain on my feet. With wedges your feet are bent less, making them more comfortable.

My suggestion for preventing aching joints and blisters is to switch on and off between heels and flats when possible.

Freshman Chloe Vollmar does not think they are as worth it as some people.

“In my opinion, heels are only worth it if you are comfortable in them,” Vollmar said.

That is ultimately what it comes down to.

As long as you do not wear heels every day, you are not likely to experience the poor health effects.

Wear what makes you comfortable.

Flats or heels, your outfit can still make a statement.
