Dark Sky Park is enhanced by the Aurora Borealis
Looking for some time away from the your everyday routine to go have some fun outdoors?
Then you might want to go check out the Headlands International Dark Sky Park in Mackinaw City.
Entry to the Headlands, one of only 23 International Dark Sky Parks in the United States, is free.
A dark sky park is an area of land that shows a great image of a starry night.
The park encompasses two miles of undeveloped land on Lake Michigan, with a five-mile trail around the whole place.
There is no camping at Headlands. If you wish to stay overnight, you may rent out its guest house.
The three-floor guest house is available year round, with enough room to house 22 people.
At the park you can see the Milky Way, as well as the Northern Lights. The best time to see the Northern Lights, which is the common name for the Aurora Borealis, is during the fall through the summer solstice.
Ms. Mary Stewart Adams, the program’s director, said this season is busy.
“(August is the most popular month) because the Milky Way is the thickest during this month and the Perseid Meteor shower is active,” Adams said.
In 2015, The Headlands received a total of 40,000 visitors. The park will soon have an indoor program space and an observatory with a large telescope.
In the next few years, Adams hopes to create more learning opportunities for young people of all ages to learn about the night sky and science.
Adams said the most impressive part of the park is its “natural beauty, which includes the water, shoreline, and starry nights.”
Peyton Hart, freshman, has never heard of Dark Sky Park, but thinks it sounds like a cool place to visit.
“I think it would be fun to go and hang out with friends and family at the campground,” Hart said.
Dark Sky Park is a must-see for all Michiganders.
