The girls’ basketball team shut down Owosso 42-25 on Friday, Dec. 4.

The girls started off slow, as they finished the first quarter down 12-6. They came back in the second and ended the half down 18-16.

Owosso struggled against Kearsley’s lock-down defense in the second half. The Trojans were outscored 13 to 0 in the third quarter and only managed seven points in the fourth.

Brittney Dick, junior, and Zaria Mitchner, freshman, stepped up for the Hornets on defense. The duo combined for 11 steals — six for Dick and five for Mitchner — and each girl had a block.

Mitchner had a nice night all over the court. She tallied six offensive rebounds, three assists, and six points.

The Hornets offense exploded in the second half, scoring 26 points, cruising past Owosso for their second win of the season.

Junior Brandi Morgan was locked in from long range, scoring all of her team-high 12 points from the 3-point line. She ended the game shooting nearly 45 percent from beyond the arc.

Morgan also grabbed five on the glass as the Hornets swarmed the paint.

The team combined for a season-high 33 rebounds with freshman Mackenzie Ramey leading in rebounding, pulling down eight.

Senior Diane Bond also sparked the Hornets, scoring 10 points.

The Trojans’ offense came mostly through two players. Ellie Hood scored nine points, and Anna Raffaelli followed with eight of her own.

Kearsley is now 2-0 on the season, and will go for its third win Tuesday, Dec. 8, at home against Mt. Morris.
