To those who have served: An open letter to veterans

Nadia Koontz

Dear Veterans,

What is there more to say other than thank you?

Not only have you protected my freedom to exist in a democratic society, but you have also continued your service to the United States by devoting countless hours to help develop the leaders of tomorrow.

Because of your service, children all over the country, including myself, are able to grow into who they are meant to be.

Because of you, I am able to carry out my daily routines, such as going to work or stopping to get coffee without having to worry if I will make it home.

Mr. Elmer Davis once said, “This nation will remain the land of the free only so long as it is home of the brave.”

I cannot emphasize how brave a person must be in order to dedicate one’s life to protecting those who they have never met.

Your love for this country is truly inspiring. You love our country and people so much that you are willing to put your life on the line and literally take a bullet for people you do not know.

The selfless act of serving our country deserves the highest level of gratitude and respect we have to offer. It is astonishing that people whom I have never met will fight in order to grant rights to myself.

Your service makes my home a better place and continues to keep our nation a strong beacon of freedom and democracy.

The phrase, Freedom is not Free, whichever is etched on the wall of the Korean War Memorial, could not be any more true.

A life is precious and those who have fallen will never be forgotten.

Thank you to those who have put their lives in front of my own and this country to give me a better tomorrow. You save my life everyday from war and danger.

Mr. Joseph Campbell said, “A hero is someone who has given his or her life to something bigger than oneself.”

You may not wear a bright red cape or fly, but you are my heroes.

Because my life is worth fighting for, I will continue to carry out my duty as a citizen thoughtfully not only today, on Veterans Day, but everyday.

Thank you for believing in not only the Stars and Stripes but for me.

Sincerely,

A proud citizen
