Grow a moustache, raise awareness for Movember
Even though this November has been setting record temperatures in the 70s, the cold air will be coming and snow could even be on the way. Therefore, the beards are coming out to play.
Moustache November, or “Movember,” is here.
Movember was thought of by The Movember Foundation, a global charity founded in Australia in 2003 that is dedicated to helping men live happier and healthier lives by raising awareness for health problems in men.
The idea is to change up a man’s appearance, sparking up a conversation often leading to men’s health.
Senior Travis Webb plans to support the movement this month by growing out his facial hair.
“I want to get all of my friends involved,” Webb said. “I think it is cool to grow a moustache or beard without getting looked at with a dirty look. Now I can say I am doing it for a good cause.”
Movember invests strategically in four key focus areas: prostate cancer, testicular cancer, poor mental health, and physical activity.
These are some of the biggest health issues men face.
Prostate cancer is the second most common cancer found in men in the United States. The American Cancer Society estimates about 220,800 new cases will be filed for the year 2015 alone. Also, about 27,500 deaths will result from prostate cancer.
The second factor, testicular cancer, is the most common cancer in young men of the United States ages 15-34. The ACS estimates about 8,400 new cases this year and almost 400 deaths.
The third factor is not a cancer, but that does not make it any less dangerous or less important to recognize. Around one in four adults in the United States will experience a mental health problem each year.
Finally, it all comes down to physical health. Around one half (53.8 percent) of American men will meet the federal guidelines for physical activity.
Zach McKay, senior, believes issues in men’s health are important to acknowledge.
“I believe it is a great idea to get involved.” McKay said. “I think men’s issues are often put on the back burner and it’s important to realize what is going on with peoples’ health.”
Since 2003, the nonprofit Movember Foundation has raised nearly $650 million funding over 1,000 programs dedicated to men’s health.
The Movember movement has gained support from over 5 million Mo Bros and Mo Sistas.
To get in on the action, follow these three steps:
1- Sign up at us.movember.com and shave only at the beginning of the month.
2- Grow and groom your mustache, beard, or both for the 30 days of Movember.
3- Raise funds and awareness for men’s health.
If you cannot grow a beard or need to stay baby smooth for work, you can help by donating to the organization.
For Webb, raising awareness and helping to raise money for men’s health issues are important.
“Everyone knows someone who has been affected by some type of cancer,” Webb said. “We should help support movements dedicated to help funding research.”
