Second quarter dooms football against Linden

Kearsley’s offense gets set to snap the ball in its homecoming game against Linden on Friday, Oct. 9.

The football team lost its homecoming game against Linden 33-7 on Friday, Oct. 9.

The Eagles went on a scoring tear in the second quarter, scoring 27 points.

At 10:02 in the second quarter, senior Matt Parkinson returned a kick from Linden’s Bailey Davis 83 yards to the Eagle 3-yard line, sparking the Hornets and setting them up with first and goal.

Shortly afterward, at 9:06, senior running back Josh Roberts ran one yard for a touchdown. Junior Michael Dilleha kicked the point after, tying the game 7-7.

Roberts led the Hornets offense with 68 yards rushing on 25 attempts for one touchdown. He also had one reception for four yards.

Kearsley’s quarterback woes continued in this game. Junior Chandler Ford was the fourth player the Hornets have started under center this season.

Ford struggled in his second start of the year, going 2-for-7 with 31 yards and throwing two interceptions. Ford also rushed five times for eight yards.

On the other side, Linden’s Aaron Sarkon excelled from the pocket. Sarkon completed 15 of his 27 passing attempts for 224 yards, with four touchdowns and one interception.

The Eagles’ passing attack featured Cade Dixon, who had two catches for 72 yards, scoring on both.

Senior Tyler Schwerin had one catch for the Hornets for 27 yards.

Leading Kearsley’s defense was junior linebacker Brandon Byczyski. Byczyski had six solo tackles, and three assisted, including one for loss.

The 1-6 Hornets have now lost all five of their Metro League games, after falling to Swartz Creek 35-6 last week on Friday, Oct. 2.

The team travels next to Brandon on Friday, Oct. 16.
