Stretch pants don't fit at Kearsley

Stretch pants, such as yoga pants or leggings, have been banned from school.

Students must now wear shirts that go past their waistlines if they wish to wear stretch pants.

Principal Brian Wiskur said the policy is in place, and he wants girls to know what the rules are.

If a student violates the policy, Wiskur said girls will not automatically be suspended.

“We are asking girls to change, and suspending repeat offenders,” Wiskur said.

Since the policy is new, the administration is still working out the technicalities. However, Wiskur believes the new policy is the beginning of change.

“It’s a start. Not doing something would be saying it’s OK,” Wiskur said.

But some students feel the policy infringes on their right to express themselves through what they wear, and junior Megan Livingston is one of them.

Livingston also believes the policy is not being enforced well.

“I see girls wear them (yoga pants) every day,” Livingston said, “and they never get in trouble for it.”

The policy aggravates Livingston.

She said, “Everyone I’ve talked to is irritated with it because they feel the school is telling them what they can and cannot wear.”
