Rice Krispies monster treats are easy to create
Halloween is known for collecting yummy treats, but don’t forget — you can make your own.
For a fun Halloween activity, my grandma, Ms. Susan Kern, my best friend, senior Audriana Counelis, and I made monster-themed Rice Krispies treats.
This is the recipe for our spooky treat.
Ingredients: (I bought all of my ingredients from Kroger but they can be found at any grocery store.)
- A box of Kellogg’s Rice Krispies — need six cups
- A bag of mini marshmallows — must have six cups
- Butter (I used a stick of margarine) — need six tablespoons
- White candy coating — I used a whole package
- A package of edible candy eyes
- Food coloring — any colors; I used yellow, green, blue, and pink
First, get a medium-sized pot and place it on the stove. Turn the heat between low and medium and measure out six tablespoons of butter to put in the pan.
After the butter is melted, measure six cups of mini marshmallows and put them in the pot. Stir until the marshmallows and butter melt together into a gooey mixture.
Next, measure six cups of Rice Krispies cereal. We measured ours ahead of time and put the six cups of cereal into a bowl so it was easy to grab and pour into the pot all at once.
Take the pot off of the heat and mix the cereal and marshmallow mixture together in the pot until the cereal is evenly coated.
Get a 9-inch by 13-inch pan, or any size pan you prefer, and grease it by coating the pan with a stick of margarine so the mixture doesn’t stick. Non-stick spray will also work for this step.
After the pan is evenly coated in butter or non-stick spray, pour the mixture into the pan and press it down with a spoon. To avoid having the mixture stick to the spoon, spread butter on the spoon before pressing the mixture down.
Now, wait for the mixture to set. In order to speed this process up, we put the pan in the refrigerator.
While the Rice Krispies treats are setting, melt the white candy coating. The kind we bought had microwave directions, so we microwaved the container in increments of 30 and 15 seconds. Be sure to read the instructions on whatever type of candy coating you buy.
When the candy coating is completely melted, divide it into bowls to have all the colors you want to use.
Put several drops of food coloring into each bowl and stir until the desired color is achieved.
Remove the Rice Krispies treats from the fridge and cut them into even rectangles. We cut ours so that we’d have 16 Rice Krispies treats.
Then, dunk one of the cut Rice Krispies treats into a bowl of candy coating and coat about half of the treat.
Take some of the edible eyes and stick them on the treats. Remember, they are monster treats, so there can be more or less than two eyes. Be creative.
After the candy coating dries, the treats are finished. Now it’s time to enjoy this sweet, spooky dessert.
