Wrestling wins third district title in a row

Kearsley won its district championship Thursday, Feb. 8.

The wrestling team won its MHSAA Division 2 district tournament Thursday, Feb. 8, beating Flint Northwestern-Southwestern and Clio.

This marks the third consecutive district championship for the Hornets, who have won the title 12 times in the last 17 years.

The Hornets first took on Flint Northwestern-Southwestern in the semifinal, winning 66-18.

In the final, Kearsley competed against Clio for the district trophy.

The Hornets beat the Mustangs 44-32, claiming the title and securing an almost 400-mile trip to the regional in the Upper Peninsula.

Kearsley will compete in the regional tournament on Wednesday, Feb. 14, in Marquette. The Hornets left school before it began on a motor coach that will take up to seven hours.

The team will compete against St. Johns to start the tournament, and the winners of the competition will play the winners of the Marquette-Gaylord matchup for the regional title.

St. Johns is ranked No. 8 in the state, while Gaylord is No. 4.

The Hornets fell to St. Johns last year in its district competition, when the Red Wings were the No. 3 ranked team in the state.
