The Hornets beat the Mustangs 44-32, claiming the title and securing an almost 400-mile trip to the regional in the Upper Peninsula.

Kearsley will compete in the regional tournament on Wednesday, Feb. 14, in Marquette. The Hornets left school before it began on a motor coach that will take up to seven hours.

The team will compete against St. Johns to start the tournament, and the winners of the competition will play the winners of the Marquette-Gaylord matchup for the regional title.

St. Johns is ranked No. 8 in the state, while Gaylord is No. 4.

The Hornets fell to St. Johns last year in its district competition, when the Red Wings were the No. 3 ranked team in the state.
