Hockey falls to the trio of Swartz Creek/Clio/Flushing

United took on Swartz Creek/Clio/Flushing at Flint Iceland Arenas on Saturday, Jan. 27, losing 5-4.

A cooperative team, United is comprised of players from Kearsley, Brandon, Holly, and Lake Fenton.

United opened up the scoring in the first period with an unassisted goal by Lake Fenton senior Alec Copeland.

The score was tied at the end of the period.

The team scored two goals to open the second period, one scored unassisted by Holly senior Logan Henry.

The second goal was scored by Kearsley senior Dru Sweers, his 18th of the season. Holly freshman Colby Polutanovich assisted on the goal.

Swartz Creek/Clio/Flushing tied up the game with two goals late in the second period. Their second goal came with just one second left in the period.

The team also scored the first goal of the third period, taking a 4-3 lead.

Sweers scored his second goal of the night to tie the game with 8:10 left in the third period. Lake Fenton freshman Macgregor Hepburn assisted on the goal.

But Swartz Creek/Clio/Flushing scored a goal with 10 seconds left in the game to break the 4-4 tie.

Kearsley junior Tyler Keller had a tough night in net, allowing five goals on 23 shots for a .783 save percentage.

The heart-breaking loss is their second in a row, and the team is now 6-9, with one overtime loss.

Sweers remains the team’s leading scorer, with 19 goals and 15 assists.

United will face Southgate Anderson at home on Saturday, Feb. 3.
