VanSteenburg, Willingham will continue playing sports in college

Two Kearsley seniors, Connor VanSteenburg and Magan Willingham, have signed letters of intent to continue playing sports throughout their college career.

VanSteenburg has signed with Olivet Nazarene University in Bourbonnais, Ill., to continue golf. He will receive a scholarship his freshman year, and if he plays well throughout the season that scholarship will increase.

VanSteenburg has played golf since he was five when his dad introduced him to the sport.

In addition to golf, VanSteenburg is going to Olivet to focus on a career in engineering.

“I’ve always been good at math, and I took drafting and design for three years,” VanSteenburg said.

VanSteenburg believes that it will be hard to balance school and golf at the same time, but he believes he will be able to handle it.

VanSteenburg is excited to continue golfing throughout college.

“I think it’s a good opportunity for me,” he said.

However, VanSteenburg doesn’t plan on continuing the sport in competitions after college.

“Competitively, I probably won’t play, but I will just for fun,” VanSteenburg said.

Willingham signed with Cornerstone University in Grand Rapids, Mi. to continue her bowling career.

Willingham has played the sport since Kearsley started a middle school team, which was her seventh grade year. She will receive a $3,000 scholarship her freshman year, which can increase with every year she bowls.

Other than bowling, Willingham is going to Cornerstone to pursue a career in social work.

“At my church there was a lady that had foster kids and she was telling me about the social worker that helped put those kids in her home,” Willingham said. “It made me want to help put kids in better homes.”

Willingham believes that juggling her sport and college courses will be challenging, but she knows she can get through it with the support of the people around her.

“I know it’ll be challenging in the beginning, but a lot of girls on my team are going into social work as well, so I know I can count on them,” Willingham said. “Also, my coach is more focused on my studies than bowling.”

Although excited to continue bowling throughout college, Willingham is not planning on continuing bowling after she is finished with college.
