Senior Dylan Tarrence celebrates his quarterfinal victory over Blake Ross from Muskegon Reeths-Puffer at 160 pounds on Friday, March 3. During the next day of the MHSAA Division 2 individual state final, Tarrence finished as runner-up, earning All-State honors.

Even though senior Dylan Tarrence walked away from the MHSAA Division 2 individual state final with an All-State medal, he was not satisfied.

Tarrence finished second in the 160-pound weight class at The Palace of Auburn Hills on Saturday, March 4, falling to senior Lucas McFarland from DeWitt, who was ranked first in the state.

Tarrence was ahead during his final match but in the last 10 seconds of the third period, McFarland flipped Tarrence onto his back, scoring enough points to win. Tarrence lost 6-5.

“Although making it to the finals is a great accomplishment, I did not feel satisfied taking second,” Tarrence said. “Throughout my years of wrestling, I feel like I’ve put forth enough time and effort to become a state champ. But I came up a little short. Instead of hanging my head, I’ve decided to learn from these experiences to push me to become better.”

Tarrence has received many offers to wrestling in college but is unsure of where he would like to go.

Another Hornet who earned All-State honors, senior Reese Harburn, finished fifth. Harburn pinned Isaac Weir from Stevensville Lakeshore in under five minutes in the fifth-place match.

Harburn is proud to get to be on Kearsley’s Wall of Fame where his picture will be displayed with other Kearsley athletes who were All-State in their respective sports.

“I was proud of myself for placing (in the top eight), even though I wish I could’ve done better,” Harburn said. “I will use this experience as I continue my wrestling career either at Adrian or Alma College.”

Kearsley qualified six wrestlers for the individual state final, beginning Thursday, March 2. Only Tarrence and Harburn advanced to Saturday’s final round.

Correction: This story originally reported Reese Harburn as losing his match to Isaac Weir. That was an error. The story has been updated, correctly identifying Harburn as the winner of that match.
