Five juniors prepare differently for the SAT

Kearsley High School juniors will be taking the SAT in April.

For most students, junior year is the toughest year of high school, with the pressure to study in order to get a high test score combined with school work.

Five juniors answered three questions regarding the SAT.

What makes you most nervous about taking the SAT?

“The most nerve-racking thing about the SAT is not getting a high enough score,” junior Bailee Stevens said.

Have you done anything to prepare for the SAT? Do you plan to?

“I have not personally prepared myself. But in class I’ve done tests, and the honors kids had to take the PSAT again this year. After that, I did improve,” Stevens said. “I plan to prepare more when it gets closer to time.”

Do you plan to take the test more than once?

“Most likely I’ll end up taking the ACT as well,” Stevens said.

What makes you most nervous about taking the SAT?

“Getting a low score. Colleges look at the scores and I’m trying to shoot for good colleges,” junior Hannah VanOoteghem said. “I’m also trying to get a lot of scholarships as well, and I feel like if I perform poorly on the SAT then I won’t have a good shot at achieving my goals of scholarships and going to a good university.”

Have you done anything to prepare for the SAT? Do you plan to?

“I have prepared myself. Mr. (Chris) Torok, (math teacher), would occasionally give us SAT prep worksheets and work out the problems with us,” VanOoteghem said. “Also, as an honors student we had to take a PSAT, and we were scored on that test too. I remember in the beginning of the year Mr. (Craig) Golembiewski, (counselor), gave us PSAT prep workbooks.”

Do you plan to take the test more than once?

“I didn’t know that it was an option to take the test more than once,” VanOoteghem said. “Hopefully, I don’t have to retake it.”

What makes you most nervous about taking the SAT?

“I don’t know what to expect. I can practice all I want, but I still won’t have a clear idea of what’s going to be on there,” junior Emily Diehl said. “Also the fact that if I do bad on it, I won’t get into the college I want.”

Have you done anything to prepare for the SAT? Do you plan to?

“I haven’t started yet, but I plan to get some SAT practice books from the library and begin preparing myself,” Diehl said.

Do you plan to take the test more than once?

“I don’t plan on it, but if I do bad then I will for sure,” Diehl said.

Kyle Palka, junior

What makes you most nervous about taking the SAT?

“The weight that it carries,” junior Kyle Palka said. “The SAT controls so many of the opportunities you can get.”

Have you done anything to prepare for the SAT? Do you plan to?

“Other than the PSAT or the stuff that we do in our math and English classes, I haven’t done any prep,” Palka said. “I don’t really think I will do anything extra outside of that.”

Do you plan to take the test more than once?

“I will probably take the SAT more than once just to have the best chance at my best score,” Palka said.
