Athletes should be aware of summer practices to help them prepare for the upcoming fall season.

As the school year comes to an end, fall sports are beginning their summer training for the upcoming season.

There are several sports that begin in the fall, and participating in summer training is a great way to gain exposure to the team atmosphere prior to the beginning of the season.

However, all sports teams are required to have a week off of training the week of July 4, as well as another week off right before the season officially begins.

In addition, once the season begins all athletes must have a current physical. The high school will be hosting physicals Aug. 4 at 6 p.m. Cost is $20.

Tennis

Boys’ tennis begins in the fall; however, there will be summer workouts for boys and girls who play tennis.

Practices will be Tuesday through Thursday, 1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m., starting Tuesday, June 21, and ending Tuesday, June 28.

Swim

The swim program will hold practices throughout the summer that are open to boys and girls.

The teams will practice Tuesday and Thursday until school ends. Once school ends, practices will be Monday through Thursday, beginning Monday, June 20, and ending Thursday, July 21.

Practices are from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m in the high school pool.

If there is a good turnout, morning practices may be added.

Sideline Cheer

For cheerleaders who have made the team, there will be practices Monday through Thursday, all summer.

Monday and Wednesday practices will be noon to 2 p.m.

Tuesday and Thursday practices will be 8 a.m. to 10:30 p.m.

Girls’ Cross Country

Practice will begin Monday, June 20, and will be Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays.

However, practice dates and times are subject to change.

Volleyball

Volleyball players will be able to work out at First Class Athletics Monday through Thursday, starting Monday, June 20, through Thursday, Aug. 4. Workouts will be from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

The cost is $75, and there is a registration night, which is Thursday, June 9.

Prospective players should also consider playing for Arsenal Arena Summer League for free. This does not guarantee placement on the high school team, but is a great way to practice throughout the summer and be seen by coaches.

The Arsenal Volleyball Club is behind Skateland on Dort Highway. This league plays on Tuesdays from 9 to 11:30 a.m. on June 21 and 28, as well as July 12, 19, 26.

There will also be a Matchpoint Volleyball Camp Aug. 16 and 17, from 8 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

The camp is located at Kearsley High School and costs $50.

Football

Summer training for the football team will begin Monday, July 11, and will run until Thursday, July 28.

Practices will be Monday through Thursday, 8:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. For specific dates and times for freshman, junior varsity, and varsity players, as well as position practices, see the schedule at Kearsley Athletics for more details.

Golf

The golf program usually plays for the Flint Junior Golf Association. For more information, contact Coach Loyd Walter at 810-252-7091.

At this time, boys’ cross country and soccer do not have set summer schedules.
