The girls’ basketball team lost its first game on Dec. 3 to Lapeer 29-45.

Coach Matt Gildner said Lapeer’s defense was too much for the Hornets.

“We struggled against the pressure defense, turning the ball over too often,” Gildner said. “That was fairly surprising considering how well we did during the pre-season scrimmages.”

Sophomore Rachel Talley led the Hornets with 11 points.

Junior Emalie Lewis grabbed seven rebounds.

Junior Diane Bond said the team is young but expects play to improve.

“We have the potential to play and communicate better,” Bond said. “We’re going to work on our teamwork and chemistry so we can compete with other teams throughout the season.”

Gildner also believes his team will get better.

“As a young team the learning curve is greater,” he said. “But I have faith in this group of girls to figure it out.”
